What’s New? What’s Next? What’s the Impact? Mark Development filed for a special permit for Riverside and a request for amendments to the zoning code for this site, even though visioning is not completed yet. The city council will schedule public hearings to discuss Riverside. This proposal will add 1.5 mil. sq. ft., of a dense, urban development to our villages.
How will oversized development impact villages and ALL of Newton? Massive development proposals at Riverside, Needham Street and Washington Street combined, would drastically impact Newton’s villages and bring more traffic than our streets can handle. Villages are coming together to advocate for RightSize development in our city. Bring your questions. There will be plenty of time for discussion.
The Mark Development Proposal is:
Too big: 610,000 sq. ft. commercial; 675 housing units; 65,000 sq. ft. retail
Too tall: 14- and 18-story towers just 400 feet from a low-rise neighborhood
Too dense: New village as dense as Manhattan (66K people/sq.mi.). Limited open space
Too intrusive: Wall of 6-8 story buildings along scenic Grove Street
Too much traffic: Could double traffic on Grove Street and nearby intersections
We support: development that reflects the scale of our villages; is limited by traffic that our streets can bear; provides access to efficient and reliable transportation; marshals all possible resources to create real affordable housing; preserves green and open space; and unites our communities.
